Pearl teaches Connie how to sword fight on Steven's request but it doesn't go quite as planned. Sworn to the Sword dives into parts of Pearl's psychology: and her mourning of Rose Quartz. Steven and Connie want to be ready to defend themselves should any dangerous situation arise from one. Pearl takes up the task of teaching Connie how to fight with a sword. However, as Pearl teaches Connie how to ready herself in fights as the episode progresses, things start getting out of control and Connie is given the impression that her life is not worth anything compared to the one she swears to protect: Steven Universe.

This episode is still a fun romp, but it does have some surprising twists in here: revealing that Pearl sacrificed herself CONSTANTLY for Rose when she was still alive. In Steven, Pearl sees Rose, as is stated in the line: 'Why won't you just let me do this for you, Rose?' Pearl is like Steven's mother; and she can't stand to see what's left of her lover to be in the face of danger. Through Steven's selfless protection of Connie, being her shield, Pearl realizes that Steven can defend himself and that both he and Connie's lives come hand in hand: even when in battle. So she decides that they both need to complete training under her guidance.

Steven Universe has shaped itself up to be one of the very best cartoons of the 21st Century thus far. Its characters are larger than life, and possibly older than it, the stories are rich and deep even for kid's show material, and the direction makes you happy and get a mental high every time you watch it. Steven Universe is an ecstasy trip for the eyes and mind. Warning do not read unless you've seen the episode.

This was a great start to Season 2 and this is one of my favorite episodes for the season. I really liked the new styled intro which is sort of an anime style. But most importantly I really like that this season is going to take a slightly darker direction, which makes sense because it means the show has entered the second act where things usually get harder.

I really liked two of the songs in this episode, from the Jam Buds song with both Steven and Connie which I thought was sweet and also ironically is part of the theme of this episode on the importance of having a number two/significant other in your life.

Even liked the other song "I'll do it for him." which I just though was beautiful, really liked hearing the vocals of both voice actresses for both Connie and Peril, both played off nicely.

It's cool that Connie is finally going to have a more active role in things which is something I've been waiting to happen for a while. We also get another little tid bit on Gem history as we see part of Peril's room/dimension, where their all in some sort of sky arena and supposedly many battles took place in that arena. Really like the design and mere concept of it, reminds me of the arena in the anime/manga series "Revolutionary Girl Ulhana".

We see training is going good but unfortunately it goes a little too well as we see Peril is sort of brainwashing Connie with the mentality of disconnection and no mattering except the person you protect. Personally I think this mentality is wrong, yes be selfless but you must also be sensible.

Both Steven as well as Connie were obeying the Green Beret code of honor, "You watch my back and I'll watch yours." Yes, it's true one person can win a battle but it takes an army to win a war. Let alone due to the weapons of choice both have both ironically go together, sword and shield get it. Anyway the action sequence with both of them was solid, it was really cool seeing both just fighting together which further justified why both are right for each other. Even liked the fight both have against Peril which was a decent battle, yeah it was a short one but enough to make Peril think twice.

Near the end it gets emotional and I once again felt for Peril as we discover more of the depth of her grief for Rose. She tried to push the mentality on Connie because she didn't want to lose Rose again, in her mind she feels the passing of Rose was her fault. I thought, no it's not, you were the best friend Rose ever had and same with her, Rose's passing was just something you couldn't protect her from.

And really liked how in the end, when both Steven and Connie consulted her again and she remember how Rose made her feel and that memory made Peril make the right decision and take both Steven and Connie under her wing which was touching.

Like jam on a bisket, both Connie and Steven make a tasty combo.

Rating: 4 stars
